Accidents happen. As a driver you have a responsibility to stay at the scene of the accident.
Enlist the help of others to warn oncoming vehicle traffic
Help those who are injured as much as you are able
Call police if there is an injury or considerable damage (anything over $1000)
Exchange information with any other drivers involved in the accident. If you have a smart phone, take pictures of the other driver’s documents
Write down names and addresses of any witnesses
Do not sign any documents which admit that the accident was your fault.
If damage is minor, move vehicles to the side of the road to clear up the traffic obstruction
Have a medical check up, even if you are feeling fine now, some symptoms don’t show up until days after.
Report the accident to your insurance company right away
Don’t allow others to convince you to settle between yourselves without going through insurance, particularly if you are injured or are not at fault.
